Braces, also known as orthodontic appliances, are a device used to align the teeth and guide them into proper position over time. Braces are used to correct malocclusion issues or bite problems that can cause tooth decay or damage the alignment of the teeth. At Arctic Smiles Orthodontics, braces are the most common method used to guide alignment and straighten the teeth for children and adults.
Traditional braces are made of high-grade stainless steel, with metal brackets attached to each tooth and an archwire connecting them. The brackets are designed with rounded edges to prevent them from irritating the inside of the mouth or causing discomfort. Still, some patients experience irritation as they adjust to wearing them. Patients may notice their teeth feeling a little loose during the transition as the teeth move and the jawbone changes shape. This feeling is usually temporary as the mouth adjusts to the new alignment.
The brackets are made of translucent ceramic material, less visible on your teeth than metal brackets. Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces. They require the same maintenance and care with adjustments every six weeks. Attaching them to each tooth may look bigger than metal brackets. But they are much less noticeable than the metal type. Ceramic braces are a good option for patients who want something less noticeable than traditional metal braces.
Lingual braces are like traditional braces in that they are constructed of metal. However, they are affixed to the interior of the teeth rather than the exterior. Because they are covered behind the teeth, this type cannot be seen by others. They are, however, less effective than regular braces and frequently take longer to attain the ideal teeth alignment.
Braces can give you a healthy, beautiful smile! They can also help improve your bite and your oral health. Get in touch with Arctic Smiles Orthodontics at 12020 E Shea Blvd Suite 10, Scottsdale, AZ 85259, or call (480) 614-2211 to schedule an appointment.
